Make the Best French Toast - Everything You Need to Know

French Toast Recipe
French toast is one of those nostalgic, crowd-pleasing breakfasts that’s easy to make and endlessly customizable. Whether you're cooking for a lazy weekend morning, serving up something extra special for mother's day breakfast in bed, or hosting a brunch celebration, this classic dish is the perfect base for creativity.

Let’s start with the basics—and then level it up with fun, flavorful twists that will make your French toast anything but ordinary.

The Basic French Toast Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices thick-cut bread (like brioche or challah)
Pro tip: Slightly stale bread works best because it soaks up the egg mix without getting soggy.
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk (we recommend Smith Brothers milk for its fresh, rich flavor!)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Butter for the pan

Instructions:

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, letting it soak for a few seconds per side.
  3. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the slices until golden brown on each side, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  4. Serve warm with syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar.

3 Creative Ways to Level Up Your French Toast

1. Flavor Your Milk Base

Why stick with plain milk when you can infuse your custard with flavor?

Strawberry Milk: A fun twist for kids and adults alike. Use Smith Brothers strawberry milk to add fruity sweetness to your french toast.

Eggnog: Perfect for the holidays—swap in Smith Brothers eggnog for a rich, spiced eggnog french toast.

Chai Powder or Spices: Stir chai powder, cardamom, or even cocoa powder into your milk mixture for a bold, aromatic experience.

Tip: when using sweetened milk mixture, the sugars may cause your French toast to burn more quickly. Adjust by reducing the heat slightly and increasing the cook time.

2. Stuff It with Something Sweet

Turn your French toast into a decadent, filled delight by making a stuffed version. Add your filling between two slices of bread, then press the bread slices together gently to keep the filling in. Carefully dip the "sandwich" in the egg mixture and cook as usual.

Ricotta + Lemon Zest: Mix a dollop of ricotta with a sprinkle of lemon zest, then spread it evenly between two slices of bread before dipping and cooking. Top with berries and honey for a brunch-worthy finish.

Chocolate: Spread Nutella or melted chocolate inside, then sprinkle chocolate chips over the top for dessert-style French toast.

Nut butter or cookie butter: Spread your favorite nut butter or cookie butter inside.

3. Bread Swap: Go Bold

Your bread makes all the difference. Shake things up with:

Cinnamon Swirl Bread: Extra cinnamon means extra cozy flavor.

Fruit & Nut Bread: Raisin, cranberry, or apricot breads add natural sweetness and texture.

Sweet Hawaiian Rolls: Slightly sweet and pillowy soft—leave them whole and sprinkle with cinnamon or icing after cooking for indulgent mini French toast bites!

Welcoming Portland and Vancouver to Smith Brothers Home Delivery!

Making life easier for our neighbors since 1920

Smith Brothers is the simplest, most reliable grocery delivery service in the Pacific Northwest. We're excited to announce that Alpenrose home delivery customers in the Portland and Vancouver areas are joining the Smith Brothers community!

Alpenrose and Smith Brothers joined forces in 2019 to carry on our shared values in service, quality, and community that began over 100 years ago. We're changing the name of our home delivery service in the greater Portland area to Smith Brothers, which will help us improve the service and quality of products we provide to you, and our customers across the Pacific Northwest.

Our service to you remains the same

Following the transition to Smith Brothers, all the things you love about the service will remain intact. You will have...

  • The same delivery day and time
  • The same items on your order (most Alpenrose products will change to Smith Brothers)
  • The same milkman/woman
  • The same login information
  • The same account, delivery, order, and billing information
  • No contracts, subscriptions, memberships, or shopper fees
  • Free delivery for orders over $15

We've done our best to make the transition seamless for you.

What will change

For Alpenrose customers joining Smith Brothers, things will mostly look different. Here are a few specific changes following the transition:

  • Most dairy products will be Smith Brothers label.
    • All Smith Brothers and Alpenrose dairy products are produced locally in Clackamas, OR (Alpenrose local headquarters) and Kent, WA. That doesn't change.
    • Swiss Supreme Chocolate Milk, cottage cheese, and a handful of other products will remain in the Alpenrose label.
    • We will make the switch to Smith Brothers dairy products automatically. There's nothing you need to do.
  • You will get a new Smith Brothers porchbox.
  • The trucks in your neighborhood will have a brand new look.
  • The website and mobile app will be Smith Brothers (don't worry, they are nearly identical).
    • The Alpenrose website will automatically redirect you to the Smith Brothers website.
    • You will need to install the Smith Brothers app on your devices (the app stores don't let us do that for you).

About Smith Brothers

Smith Brothers is a fourth-generation family-owned company, committed to supporting local farmers and businesses. We have been serving our neighbors throughout the Puget Sound for over 100 years, with the freshest milk you can buy.

About Alpenrose

Alpenrose remains Portland’s hometown dairy. Today, we call Clackamas home. The Alpenrose dairy products you love will still be available at local retail locations. In fact, we are actively working to make Alpenrose dairy products more widely available throughout the Pacific Northwest.
